What is DataGen Scholar?

A Message from the Program Creator

I created DataGen Scholar to open doors for students who may never have imagined a future in tech, data, or AI. This program is not just about learning — it is about earning while you learn, building confidence, and preparing for the jobs of tomorrow. We combine real-world skills in data literacy and generative AI with leadership training and paid micro-jobs that turn potential into purpose.

At SaNDAI, we believe in making an impact first, and our students are living proof.

Welcome to the future. Welcome to DataGen Scholar.

A First-of-its-Kind Program

DataGen Scholar aims to bridge the digital divide and prepare students for a future where data analytics and AI play a significant role in every aspect of life. DataGen Scholar is a “Learn and Earn” program. “Learning” occurs across four Modules and 46 lessons (see appendix), and “Earning” occurs via a Micro job or Module 5.

3+ Projects

By the end of the program, students will leverage Tableau and Power BI to tell stories using data. They will understand how to use 10+ generative AI applications such as ChatGPT, Browse-AI, and Gamma to improve their job prospects. They will learn to use Synthesia to elevate presentations and training programs for employers or clients using AI avatars. Better still, they will have earned at least two certificates relating to data and AI.

Why it is needed

DataGen Scholar fills a significant gap in the educational landscape by equipping high school students with essential technology skills and addresses three critical issues:

First

It provides access to technology education, as many high school students often lack tech coursework.

Second

It provides essential tech skills such as data analytics and generative AI skills that are increasingly vital for future career opportunities.

Third

It builds a more inclusive and innovative community by fostering tech literacy among our youth.

The Cost to Participate

Students are required to pay a $200 commitment fee to enroll in the DataGen Scholars Program. This fee is fully refundable at the beginning of Module 5, provided that the student has completed all required tasks from Modules 1 through 4.

In return, SaNDAI and our partners invest an average of $2,555 per student to deliver a premium learning experience. This investment provides access to cutting-edge online learning platforms, instructional materials, and interactive lessons designed to build practical proficiency in data analytics and generative AI. In addition to educational content, SaNDAI provides direct access to expert instructors, individualized check-ins, and mentoring to help students stay on track and receive the support they need.

Furthermore, this investment supports student participation in Module 5: The Micro job Phase, where students apply their newly acquired skills to real-world projects, thereby strengthening their portfolios and enhancing their career readiness. By combining technical knowledge with practical experience, SaNDAI prepares students for the careers of tomorrow in a world increasingly driven by data and innovation.

To enhance the sense of community and belonging, students also receive exclusive program gear, including a DataGen Scholar t-shirt, hoodie, and tote bag for 1 cent per item.

Students Benefit Three Ways

Virtual group-based webinars

Students participate in 32 webinars and earn $5 per webinar.

These live or recorded webinars provide students with fundamental knowledge in data analytics, generative AI, AI ethics and use, and career readiness.

Self-guided courses

Students deepen their understanding of data analytics by completing online courses offered for free via our partner, DataCamp. Students complete 14 lessons and earn $5 per lesson.

Students also have access to IBM SkillsBuild which offers over 1,000 courses on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data analysis, cloud computing, and many other technical disciplines.

Micro job

The Micro job offers students paid, hands-on experience over six months, allowing them to apply their newfound skills in real-world scenarios. Students work 10 – 20 hours per month and earn $15 per hour.

Students must pass a 150-question final exam and complete a pre-micro job capstone project before participating in the micro-job module.

The micro job is a gamechanger

On-the-job training

Students work 10–20 hours monthly on various data analytics or generative AI projects for six months.

Compensation

Students are paid $15 per hour and earn a minimum of $900 for their efforts during the program.

Career readiness

Students create resumes and LinkedIn profiles during the first month of programming and participate in social media etiquette, networking, mentorship, financial literacy, STEM career planning, and other related webinar workshops.

During the micro job phase of the program, students will complete at least three projects to test and reinforce their understanding of the data analytics and generative AI training they received during the program’s initial months. Each project will focus on practical, real-world applications of these tools, ensuring that students can effectively translate theoretical knowledge into valuable skills. The projects will cover a range of tasks, including data collection, data cleaning, data analysis, and the application of generative AI techniques to solve complex problems.

By the end of the micro job, students will have honed their technical skills and developed critical thinking and problem-solving abilities that are essential in data analytics and AI. This hands-on experience will prepare them for future professional opportunities, making them well-equipped to tackle challenges in the workforce.

Micro Jobs and Micro Credentials Improve Job Prospects

High school students can benefit significantly from stackable credentials in data analytics and generative AI. These credentials enhance employability by providing in-demand skills and improving resumes, making students more attractive to employers and colleges. The flexible, modular learning paths allow personalized and pace-adjusted education tailored to individual interests and career goals. Credentials boost college applications and prepare students for tech-driven careers, while project-based learning enhances problem-solving skills and real-world application of knowledge.

Additionally, these programs offer networking opportunities with industry professionals and peers, expanding students’ professional networks. The credentials provide a strong foundation for continuous learning and adaptability to new tech trends, ensuring long-term career growth. These credentials boost students’ confidence and goal-setting abilities, recognizing their accomplishments and preparing them for future academic and career success in a technology-driven world.

DataGen Scholar enables students to “Stack up” micro-credentials and build on their secondary school education, positioning them well for jobs of tomorrow.

Enrollment begins May 1 and goes through August 31.
Programming begins Sept 1 and runs through August 31.

The program is conducted online through SaNDAI’s Learning Platform and is accessible to students via their phones or computers. DataCamp and IBM SkillBuild lessons and coursework can be accessed using their computers.

Students are required to check in virtually with SaNDAI team members twice a week. These check-ins allow progress tracking and provide an opportunity for students to ask questions. All check-ins will occur at scheduled times each week.
